Often outside of France, the French laicism is seen as a concept that does not respect religious freedom. The law voted in 2004 that prohibits banning religious sings in public schools reinforced this impression. However, recent comparative studies throughout Europe have shown that the highest degree of respect for and interaction between members of different religions can be found in France. How can this paradox be explained?
