This lecture will use as its point of departure the different and often opposed views of the human that lie embedded in the literature on globalization and global warming. It will also review some aspects of contemporary debates around issues of climate-change policy and climate justice to explore how this human-induced crisis of planetary proportions may require us to revise our strategies for telling the story of human civilization and challenge our conceptions of human agency in history.

Dipesh Chakrabarty is Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor in History, South Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. He is also a Faculty Fellow of the Chicago Center for Contemporary Theory, an Associate Faculty of the Department of English, and holds a visiting position at the Research School of Humanities at the Australian National University. In June and July 2010 he stays at the IWM as a Visiting Fellow. Chakrabarty is a founding member of the editorial collective of Subaltern Studies, a co-editor of Critical Inquiry, and a founding editor of Postcolonial Studies. Among his most recent publications are From the Colonial to the Postcolonial: India and Pakistan in Transition (Oxford University Press, 2007) and The Public Life of History, a special issue of Public Culture (2008). Currently he is engaged in completing two books on the presentism and the predicament of postcolonial history and on the climate of history.
