Vortrag: Russian Politics in a Time of Economic Turmoil

Russia has long been a source of puzzlement¬-and sometimes alarm¬-for Western observers. Drawing on his just published history of Russia’s re-engagement with the world (The Return: Russia’s Journey from Gorbachev to Medvedev, The Free Press, January 2011), Daniel Treisman suggests a new interpretation of the country’s politics. Rather than a nation frozen in ancient authoritarian traditions, as it is often portrayed, Russia is a society modernizing rapidly, with a government that, although less than democratic, is nevertheless sensitive to public opinion. This public opinion has, in turn, been highly responsive to changes in the country’s economy, which has been buffeted by forces largely beyond the Kremlin’s control-¬the collapse of Soviet central planning, gyrations in the world oil price, and most recently the global financial crisis of 2008-9.
